I had a Clio in the workshop earlier in the week, and I need to check with some experts here on the forum as to whether I'm incorrect in assuming the cylinder numbering is from the flywheel. The car is a Clio_II on a '54 plate, but I think it might be a 2003MY car (10th digit is a "3" in the VIN).

The 1.2 16v engine suffers from having an absolutly rediculously designed intake system coupled with the fact the renault 16v engines breath very heavily and have a poor oil breather design..oil and general gunk builds up in the lengthy intake system that could circle the world if layed out LOL, so try this first if you are having any idling
the tapping is natural for the 1.2 16v engine, all the ones ive come across have been the same. the hunting then cutting out, could possibly be the immobiliser, i always used to turn the key to the acc position, the wait for a second or two before turning the key to start the car, if you are going straight through, without stopping in the acc
May 18, 2012. #5. conversions cost more than the cars worth and more than a 172 in the long run. engine mods on a 1.2 dont work and are just a waste. the only decent option is to save up and buy a 172! this kind of thread has been done to death tbh, and it keeps coming back to the same conclusion! J.
